NOW is the time to make your donation and if you haven’t done so, no more procrastinating, the time is NOW to get off your ass and donate!!! I don’t care what the amount is, nor does anyone else, just that you GIVE. Look at it this way, if I can run from Chicago to Peoria you can find it in yourself to give $10, which is LESS than what it would cost to buy your friends a round of drinks! Today I want to share with you two of my favorite stories from St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
Mac & Cheese
If you ever make your way to Memphis to tour the hospital (which everyone should it’s such a magical and inspirational, happy place) you must stop by the Kay Kafe for lunch and get the Macaroni & Cheese. Not only is it super delicious but the story behind it is amazing and goes to show that there is NOTHING St. Jude won’t do to make these kids feel better when fighting cancer.
A while back there was a little boy who was very sick and receiving treatment at the hospital in Memphis and he was having a very hard time and was sick alot. So ill that he wasn’t eating and the doctors and nurses were becoming really concerned that this boy couldn’t/wouldn’t eat. Then one night, late at night, the little boy finally got hungry and was ready to eat, however, the only thing he had a taste for was grandma’s mac & cheese. St. Jude has some of the world’s best chefs in their kitchen and I’m sure the chef on duty late that night could have whipped up some amazing Mac & Cheese but the boy wouldn’t have it, he wanted grandmas and nothing else would do. So the chef did what logic told him to do; he found grandma and asked for her recipe so he could make it for the boy, which he did. The boy was delighted and got to have a piece of home while in Memphis, Grandmas Mac & Cheese. This is the same recipe that is now served every day at the Kay Kafe at St. Jude’s.
Turtle Picture
When you walk through the Chili’s Care Center at the hospital in Memphis, you will see a boat shaped desk and normally behind this desk you will see a woman sitting there who is known by many as Mrs. Penny. Mrs. Penny is loved by many at St. Jude and it’s obvious by all the pictures from the kids at her desk. In the pictures (above and below) you will see a picture of a turtle and how the desk is wrapped around this big column. Well when that desk was first build there was a gap between the desk and the column…you may be able to guess where this is going! If you guessed that the picture of the turtle fell between the two you guessed correctly. Turns out Mrs. Penny spent a great deal of time trying to free her turtle picture from its trap between the desk and column, without any success of course, and she was heartbroken because all of her gifts from the kids mean the world to her. So she did the logical thing and called maintenance, explained the situation and they rushed right away to help. Turns out they too were unsuccessful so they did the next logical thing, well St. Jude Children’s Hospital logical, and tore the entire desk and wall apart to retrieve the photo. Then of course they put it back together this time making sure there was no place for a photo or anything to drop and get lost. If you ever see Mrs. Penny sitting there ask her about it, she lights up and shows you the photo!!!
