This Saturday marks the 40th anniversary of the release of AC/DC‘s landmark album, Back in Black — July 25th, 1980. Back in Black was the bands seventh studio album and the band’s first album to feature vocalist Brian Johnson, following the death of previous vocalist Bon Scott. The album’s all-black cover was designed as a “sign of mourning” for Scott.
The album was composed by Johnson, Angus and Malcolm Young, and recorded over seven weeks in the Bahamas from April to May 1980 with producer Robert John “Mutt” Lange.
A little history lesson on the massive success of this album, it has sold an estimated 50 million copies worldwide and is one of the best-selling albums in music history. In 2019 it was certified 25x platinum by the RIAA. AC/DC supported the album with a yearlong world tour, which cemented them among the most popular music acts of the early 80’s. This such an iconic album and features timeless songs that still live daily like the title track “Back in Black”, “You Shook Me All Night Long”, “Hells Bells”, “Shoot To Thrill” just to name a few.
