Sinead O’Connor, the Irish vocalist that rocketed to global fame in 1990 after her haunting rendition of the Prince penned “Nothing Compares 2 U” hit has died at the age of 56. Details on cause of death have not yet been released at this time.
O’Connor’s version of “Nothing Compares 2 U” was named the #1 world single in 1990 at the Billboard Music Awards. She won a Grammy the following year for her album I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got. She garnered even more attention and sparked outrage in October of 1992 when she tore up a picture of the Pope during her stint as musical guest on Saturday Night Live.
In her storied career, she released 10 studio albums.
Just 18 months ago her 17 year old son died from suicide and the singer struggled publicly with her grief via social media.
Sinead O’Connor is survived by three children.
