The Screaming Pumpkin is by far the coolest race I have ever done, yes it even beats running Las Vegas Blvd at night! If you're looking to some good Halloween fun THIS is the race for you!
It's a prediction race, meaning there are no clocks on the course or allowed, so you'll have to leave the Garmin's at home, and the person (or team) who crosses the finish line closest to midnight with out going over wins the race! Plus, it's held in Springdale cemetery and your only light is the moonlight and about 1500 glow sticks! Be afraid, but mostly because of those famously challenging hills in Springdale, rather than running in the dark! Runner's can run the whole marathon or compete as a team of 2, 3, 4 (which is what I'll be doing) or simply run the 10K or 2 mile walk.
Don't worry about being quick because this isn't based on who comes in first or even last, it's based on who crosses the finish line closet to midnight or ideally on the stroke of midnight, who wins the race. The first year my team finished less than 5 minutes till, in year two we finished like 10 seconds from midnight whichs was close enough to take 2nd place!
Costumes are encouraged and there are awards for the best dressed, we've dressed up each year but you really have to step up the game if you want to win an award. So I'm going to keep it under wraps what our team name is and what we'll be wearing. My team is the same as what it has been the last few years my mentor Bob, boyfriend Matt and a long running friend Jill. Last year I was sidelined due to an injury but this year I am back and ready to rock! And the only fear I have is not crossing before midnight!
There are other prizes as well, all finishers who make it back before Midnight, will receive a wand, a tiara and a finisher's photo but those who make it back after midnight receive a pumpkin. Finisher Medals will be provided for all those in the Marathon and Marathon relay and trophies for those with the best predicted finishes. Plus, your race packet is always filled to the brim with some sweet goodies (I've ran a lot of races and this is one of the best packets ever) and there is some amazing post race food, refreshments and the a live band!
There is no reason to NOT run this race, fear isn't an option and your pace doesn't matter, DO IT! Registration is going on now online at Screamingpumpkinrace.com! The Screaming Pumpkin is on Friday, Oct. 26th and starts/finishes in lower Glen Oak Park!
